Telescope sees universe through gamma-ray eyes

Three weeks after the launch of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), researchers from Stanford University, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and elsewhere have shaken awake the scientific instruments aboard their $690 million satellite, 350 miles above Earth, for the first time.

And everything's working.

Telescope blasts into orbit in search of clues to how universe works

Glast.jpgThe Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope is in orbit 350 miles above Earth, lifted there by a rocket launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The blast-off was a milestone for scientists on the Stanford campus and at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, who have been working on the project for the last 15 years.
