World's most powerful X-ray machine debuts at SLAC

A high-energy x-ray beam will be one of the fastest and sharpest cameras on earth when it is turned on this summer.  This will bring new insights into how solar cells convert light to electricity and how nanoscale materials transform.

Telescope sees pulsar that winks back with gamma-ray beams

gamma_rays.jpgAbout three times a second, the rotating corpse of a 10,000-year-old star sweeps a beam of gamma rays toward Earth. This object, known as a pulsar, is the first one known to "blink" at Earth only in gamma rays, and was discovered by an orbiting observatory launched in June with significant involvement from researchers at Stanford and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

The new name: SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

SLAC_inside2.jpgA new name has been selected for the laboratory formerly known as the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and portions of it have a familiar ring. The official title now is the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
