Combatting indoor air pollution in Bangladesh

Bangladesh_cook.jpgEach year indoor air pollution, caused in part by cookstoves, is a key factor in the deaths of two million children from acute respiratory infections in developing countries. Since 2006, Stanford researchers have been working in Bangladesh to find practical, low-cost incentives that would encourage people to use cleaner, safer cookstoves.

Study links carbon dioxide emissions to increased deaths

main_image_jacobson.jpgEach increase of one degree Celsius caused by carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would lead to about 1,000 additional deaths annually in the United States alone, according to a new study. The work, by Mark Jacobson, Stanford professor of civil and environmental engineering, is the first to show a direct link between an increase in CO2 levels and resulting air pollution and an increase in human mortality.
